After nine years of living at The Old House, in the centre of the Market Square of Higham Ferrers and providing accommodation for over 10,000 guests, we, William and Simon, have decided to embark on a new and exciting venture.

To do this, we have sold The Old House, and moved just 50 yards down the road to No.1 Hind Stile in a quiet and quaint little lane.

In the last edition, we told you about the new Shepherd’s Hut that arrives at Mistletoe Cottage during December. It will be up and running in time for March, and you can make your booking for SIX people.

Mistletoe Cottage Shepherds Hut Email

The hut is available to guests who have booked the house for a short break, and can be used for two more people to join them.

Maybe some friends, perhaps the children, or even the in-laws?

The hut inside provides sleeping for one or two people; there is electricity, a small woodburner, and a table and chairs. There is a kettle to use, and a flask to bring over the milk from the house.

There is a nominal fee of just £10.00 per person per week, but we do ask that you provide your own bedding/sleeping bags and towels, etc., for the people staying in there.

An independent shower and loo are available on the ground floor in the cottage, so guests in the hut can pop across and use the facilities there. And of course, if there’s just two or four people in the cottage, the shepherd’s hut can be used to sit out and enjoy the garden with a drink as you relax during the day and evening.

When it is ready for booking, our website will cover all the details of adding the shepherd’s hut to your stay, and we do hope that you can stay with a little touch of adventure to your week away from home.

Mistletoe Cottage Finally Complete

If you have been following the story of the construction of Mistletoe Cottage, you will have been with us since last Summer, when planning permission was finally agreed to build the house, to replace some pretty shabby stables from fifty years ago.

Today, we have a great looking holiday home (though we say it ourselves!) in West Herefordshire, one of the most beautiful parts of England, for those who want to take a week away from normal life, to experience a relaxing and restful holiday.

Eco-Friendly Home

Building a new house brings many hurdles to jump, particularly with planning and energy conservation. We decided to embrace the eco-friendly qualities of the cottage with several energy-saving features:

  • Air Source Heating – this marvellous machine absorbs heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Air source heat pump efficiency ensures a sustainable, and effective heating solution. For every 3Kw of heat that an air source heat pump produces, it uses only 1Kw of energy. There is no need for fuel delivery, all the work is done by the heat pump at the back of the house.
  • Waste Water System – by using natural filters deep in the ground, the water and waste is filtered until it is safe to remove the liquid into the water table.
  • Insulation – With modern day materials, the house is designed to be draught-free and warmly insulated. Of course, windows can open for hot days, but heat loss from the house is minimum and always provides a cosy feeling.
  • The house has been built by local tradesmen from a local company, using local suppliers.
  • Our supplier for electricity is Ecotricity, who generate all their energy from renewable sources including wind, waves and solar energy farms.

What’s to do in Herefordshire?

Whether you’re into natural walks and cycle rides, history and heritage, family activities and adventures, quality food, cider and delis, books and art, there is something for everyone within 20-30 miles of Kinnersley.

Take a look at our website to see just a few of the local attractions, and make your plans to explore this delightful area.

Just 70 miles from Birmingham, 130 miles from the centre of Manchester and 165 miles from London, the journey is part of your holiday as you make your way to the relaxing and peaceful Mistletoe Cottage, nestled in between fields and farms at Kinnersley.

Our website is now up and running, so you can read more about the cottage and its features. And if you do fancy a week away, you can book online and everything will be done for you. Easy to book, Easy to stay and relax.

Penhaligon’s Fragrances

Established in 1870, Penhaligon’s quickly became established as one of the most prominent perfumers in London.

William Penhaligon was a Cornish barber who arrived in the vibrant capital city in the 1860’s to seek his fortune and so began what would become an illustrious career. Wildly creative and ambitious, William was inspired by the scent of neighbouring Turkish Baths on Jermyn Street, creating his first fragrance, Hammam Bouquet, in 1874. Showing his flair for business, William opened his own shop in 1874 near to Jermyn Street’s finest tailors, selling perfumes and other fragranced delights. He went on to receive the royal warrant and also trimmed the Shah of Persia’s beard!

Penhaligon’s perfumers today consult his recipe books and still produce in the UK, in the original bottle design.

Penhaligon’s heritage is at the heart of everything they do, creating innovative fragrances that tell a story, taking inspiration from the unexpected and from precious archives. True to William’s founding principles, they continue to create products of the highest quality imbued with the elegance of their heritage and which inspire every day. The story continues to be delivered with integrity, personality and sophistication.

Blenheim Bouquet is one of the oldest and most classical fragrances, A masterpiece of tailoring, a citrus cologne, with architecture far more formal, crisp and aristocratic than a simple white shirt. The bracing mix is of citrus oils, spices and woods.

The setting is Blenheim.  Imposing, immutable, indeed a national treasure, we are at the home of the Duke of Marlborough. He for whom this bespoke scent was first made.

Just like the most refined British humour, it is dry. (Churchill was a fan.)

Like the best gin, aromatic, whilst being as crisp as fresh laundry.  It is as versatile as a bow-tie. An invigorating daytime cocktail of citrus oils, spices and woods.

From a simple Cornish barber to a world-famous perfumer, William Penhaligon has created Blenheim Bouquet which has always transcended the infidelities of time, and has been selected for bathroom products at The Old House.

We hope you enjoy them.
